AJPH Online SUBSCRIBER HELP & SERVICES:
Frequently Asked Questions
about Institutional Subscriptions

  1. My institution has a subscription to AJPH, and access to AJPH Online, but I'm not able to see the full text of articles. I'm prompted for a username and password. Why is this happening?

When this happens, the IP address for your machine is not being recognized by our computer. This failure is caused by one of three things:

    • Your institutional subscription has not yet been activated
    • The person who "activated" the online subscription did not enter all needed IP addresses for your institution
    • The person who "activated" the online subscription does not realize that some subnets of your institution are routed through a proxy server

    What should I do?

    1. Send us Feedback so we can begin to diagnose the problem.
    2. Talk to your librarian, and let him or her know you are having trouble.

  2. My library receives the paper AJPH, and I can't get access to it online. Why?

Your institution has not yet activated its institutional subscription to AJPH Online. Notify your library that you would like access to AJPH Online, and encourage your librarian to activate the online subscription. Some libaries may have paper only subscriptons; in this case, encourage your librarian to sign up for access to both.

  3. What is institutional access?

Institutional access is defined as access to the online Journal for a single institution and its authorized users. There are no proxy restrictions. Multiple campuses are not permitted without special arrangements.

  4. Who from my institution can access AJPH Online?

Authorized users are persons affiliated with the subscribing institution who are allowed access to the online material, irrespective of geographic location. This includes full- and part-time students, employees (including faculty, staff, affiliated researchers and independent contractors) and walk-ins. Any authenticated user connecting through your institutional network will be allowed access to AJPH Online.

  5. How will this work?

When someone attempts to use AJPH Online, our server checks to see if the requesting computer is within the list of internet IP addresses provided by a subscribing institution. If it is, the reader will be able to use all those services enabled for institutional readers. For institutional subscribers, there are no usernames or passwords to remember, and there is currently no limit on the number of readers from your institution who may access AJPH Online simultaneously.

Institutions may subscribe to print only, print plus online, or online only versions. Subscribers with Institutional Online access have access to tables of contents, abstracts, full text searching, full text display, PDFs, links to Medline, future tables of contents, and document delivery. Access is limited to computers within a particular set of internet IP addresses.

  6. How can I tell if my institution has subscribed to AJPH Online?

If your institution has a subscription, you'll automatically have access to the tables of contents, abstracts, full-text searching, full text display, PDFs, Medline, and future tables of contents. You will also see a button at the top of the page confirming you are signed in as part of an institution.

If your institution has not subscribed, or if you wish to take advantage of the additional services available to APHA members, you can choose to access AJPH Online as an APHA member benefit.

  7. Can my institution subscribe only to the electronic version or only to the print?

Yes. Online Only Institutional Access or Print Only Subscriptions are available.

  8. Will we still be able to get the paper version? And for how long?

Yes, institutions and individuals will be able to receive the paper version for the foreseeable future as long as the print subscription is renewed.

  9. If our AJPH Online subscription expires and at some later date we reinstate our subscription, will we have access to all years of the electronic version?

Yes, when you buy a subscription to AJPH Online, you have access to all years in the database.

  10. How can I access AJPH Online if I am not an APHA member and I don't have access through an institutional subscription?

You may purchase AJPH Online as a Personal (Non-Member) subscriber, or you may wish to apply for APHA membership. Without a subscription you have access to the table of contents, abstracts, and full text searching (but not full text viewing) at no cost and without having to register. You may also access our pay-per-view and site pass options.
