About the Cover
Cover. The focus of this month's issue, environmental and occupational health, is exquisitely captured in the cover photograph with the simple depiction of moths swarming around lights. The high summer temperatures of 106 degrees and more, combined with the agricultural-based ecosystems of California's Central Valley, support the high numbers of moths teeming in the stifling night heat. Mass food production is supported through the heavy use of chemicals that have sickened both agricultural workers and area residents. On October 1, 2004, California enacted a new bill to provide relief for victims of pesticide drift. The Pesticide Drift Exposure Response Act, SB 391, sponsored by Senator Dean Florez of Kern County, improves emergency response to pesticide drift incidents and pays the medical bills of victims of exposure.
