About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. In the cover photograph this month, US soldiers from the 724th Transportation Company watch a slide show on a laptop computer depicting their experiences while in Iraq. Although a funny memory is captured in this photograph, there were many somber ones as well. A member of their unit, Army Spc. Keith Matt Maupin, was taken hostage while in Iraq in April of 2004. He is the only US soldier listed Missing in Action during the Iraqi conflict. These soldiers are returning to the United States after completing their tour of duty. How will US society honor their sacrifices and those of their families? As John F. Duane, JD, reminds us in the Editor's Choice column this month (p. 2125), "In our democracy, we have the power to implement policies that promote genuine public health. True patriotism demands that we do so."
