About the Cover
Cover. In the cover photograph this month, children dressed as hospital workers carry a stretcher at a carnival in St. Lucia, British West Indies, ca. 1940s-1960s. According to the Report of the Caribbean Commission on Health and Development published by the Pan American Health Organization/World Health Organization (PAHO/WHO) in 2006: "Some of the most dramatic advances over the past half-century have been seen in health. At the time of the major social convulsions of the 1930s, the infant mortality rate in Barbados topped 200 deaths per 1,000 live births. Today it is 12 per 1,000 live births. Similar advancements can be seen in all the Caribbean countries and in all the classic indicators of population health. Indeed, the data compare favorably with other countries of the world that are at similar levels of wealth and have similar geographies. This has been caused by government policies that have emphasized water and sanitation, nutrition, and the essentials of primary care." (Executive Summary, p. xiii) We join with Bernadette Theodore-Gandi, Caribbean Program Coordinator, and her colleagues at PAHO/WHO, who are making every effort to maintain the considerable health gains the Caribbean region has made in the recent past.
