About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. This month's cover image takes a humorous approach to the topic of disentangling health disparities through national surveys. According to Cheryl A. Boyce and Virginia S. Cain, coauthors of this month's Editor's Choice (p 10), narrow dimensions of race, ethnicity, geography, and age have hampered past research on mental health disparities, disability, and functioning. In this issue, the use of common core data components across the National Survey of American Life (NSAL; 2004) and the National Latino and African American Study (NLAAS; 2004) for the articles in the Research Forum titled, "Disentangling Mental Health Disparities," have maximized the potential to clarify processes and within-group differences that shape the mental health of African American, Latino, and Asian American racial and ethnic subgroups, including immigrant populations. In addition, this month's cover image has convinced us that using humor in the service of public health is a very serious matter. Expect to see more cartoons in our pages and on our website as we move judiciously forward with new tools and diverse media toward advancing social justice and the health of all.
