About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. In school districts across the United States, public health workers, parents, teachers, and school officials are collaborating on initiatives to combat the rapid rise in child obesity associated with declining levels of physical activity, poor diets, proliferation of fast foods and sodas, and increased television viewing. In this issue, Wojcicki and Heyman describe how the San Francisco United School District has changed its school lunch program by setting general nutrition standards for individual food items, reducing portion sizes, and eliminating soda sales at elementary and middle schools. Across the country, in Washington, DC, the annual National Physical Fitness and Sports Month opens with sports events on the National Mall for school-aged youths. The cover image shows 11-year-old Andrea Watkins, from the Washington Middle School for Girls, working out on free exercise equipment at the opening events on May 3, 2005.
