About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover.Public health researchers and social scientists have documented a clear correlation between the strength of social ties and the well-being of individuals and communities. Among the negative consequences of the movement of populations after wars and natural disasters is the fragmenting of social ties, which are unlikely to re-form until the displaced attain some degree of housing stability and security. On March 14, members of Congress, civil rights leaders, faith leaders, and Hurricane Katrina survivors rallied on Capital Hill to call for a halt to the March 15 eviction of some 10,000 Hurricane Katrina survivors living in hotels across the country. Among those who participated in the rally were Dr Rashad Zaydan of Baghdad, Rev Lennox Yearwood of the Hip Hop Caucus, and Hurricane Katrina survivor Bilal Moran of Gretna, Louisiana.
