About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. The SILENCE=DEATH logo on the cover dates from 1986 and is the work of a design collective, the SILENCE=DEATH project, that functioned in collaboration with the activist group AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power (ACT UP). The logo helped to galvanize and give focus to the AIDS activist movement that began in the United States and quickly expanded to other regions of the world by underscoring the coalition's political analysis of the epidemic. Printed with permission of ACT UP New York.

Cover concept and selection by Robert Sember, Aleisha Kropf, Stewart Landers, and Mary Northridge.
