About the Cover
Cover. The participants in the 2003 YMCA Triathlon are pictured running and diving into Lake Michigan at Manitowoc, Wisconsin, on this month's cover. Triathlon participants face the unique challenge of having to excel in a number of physical activities, balancing their relative strengths and weaknesses in the different activities against those of their competitors so that they remain competitive throughout the event. The careful and strategic consideration these athletes give to the multiple legs of such events mirrors the systems thinking approach to public health that is the theme of this month's issue. Unlike traditional public health approaches that target behaviors in isolation, systems thinking emphasizes the connections between elements in a social system and attempts to change particular behaviors as well as the contexts that sustain them.
