About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. The focus of this issue of the Journal is the contemporary epidemic of type 2 diabetes. As Marion Nestle notes in her editorial (p1497), it seems likely that without significant and effective public health interventions, one third of all children born today will develop type 2 diabetes during their lifetimes, even more if they are Hispanic or Black. Lifestyle changes over the past 2 decades, particularly with respect to diet and exercise, are significant contributing factors to the epidemic, abetted by monumental societal changes as diverse as reduced taxes for schools and television deregulation. On the cover of this issue, Marcia Rondonuwu is seen participating in one such intervention, a healthy diet class at Wegmans Supermarket in Woodbridge, NJ, on October 20, 2004. During the 2-hour class, Marcia and other young people were taught about the 4 food groups and the importance of a balanced diet.
