About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. In September 2004, the Smithsonian's National Museum of the American Indian was dedicated in Washington, DC. The cover photograph shows Mariah Cuch of the Northern Ute Tribe from Fort Duchesne, Utah, touring the building. The museum is dedicated to and celebrates the rights and enduring cultures of the original peoples of the Americas, albeit after centuries of persecution, marginalization and neglect. Likewise, this issue of the Journal is dedicated to the health and well-being of American Indians and Alaska Natives, a gesture that includes an acknowledgment of both the limited attention the public health establishment has generally paid to the suffering of these peoples as well as the dedicated efforts of the few who have made the public health of American Indians and Alaska Natives a priority. It is our fervent hope that we will work together to create and enact the essential health policy reforms that will best ensure the health and well-being of American Indians and Alaska Natives now and for future generations.
