About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. Given the United States' disparate health care system, secure access to health care eludes much of the working class in this country. Data from the 2003 US Census show that close to 16% of Americans had no health insurance in 2003. With an uninsured rate of 32.7%, Hispanics are about 3 times more likely than non-Hispanic Whites (at 11.1%) to be uninsured. Until the health care system is significantly changed, access for these groups and other underserved populations will be provided through a patchwork of federal, state, and local programs as well as through nonprofit initiatives such as the Open Door Health Center in rural Florida, the focus of this month's cover image. The clinic runs on in-kind support from private hospitals, free medicine samples, and the contributions of staff and volunteers. (IPNSTOCK/Ed Kashi)

Cover concept and selection by Aleisha Kropf, Robert Sember, and Luisa Borrell.
