About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. The month's cover image, Moonsong 30, was painted by Michael Jurogue Johnson, who was born in 1972 with Down syndrome. Michael draws from photographs of people's pets and direct observation to create fantastic landscapes celebrating wildlife and nature. Like many people with Down syndrome, Michael is meticulous about details and tries to paint every blade of grass or every pebble on a beach. Additional work by Michael can be found on his website, www.psln.com/sharingds/Michael. Art-making is a means of expression, investigation, production, communication, and commentary for many disabled individuals. It also has cognitive and physical therapeutic benefits and may be a source of income. Works by disabled artists, including Michael Jurogue Johnson, may be found on the website of the National Arts and Disability Center at the University of California, Los Angeles (http://nadc.ucla.edu/artwork.cfm).
