About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. To address a lack of access to dental care in areas of Virginia, the Virginia Dental Association conducts what it calls "Mission of Mercy" (MOM) projects 4 or 5 times each year. Reminiscent of a MASH (mobile army surgical hospital) unit, a MOM project brings together volunteer dentists, hygienists, assistants, dental residents, dental students, student hygienists, and administrative personnel who work as a team to construct and run a large, temporary dental health clinic in underserved areas of the state. This image is from a MOM project conducted in Wise, Va, in July 2002. According to Terry D. Dickinson, DDS, Executive Director of the VDA, "the project in Wise is done in partnership with Remote Area Medical, a 501c3 [organization] out of Knoxville [that] facilitates these types of operations around the country and in several foreign countries. The clinic done in Wise last summer saw over 4700 patients over the 2.5-day period. It was the largest health fair ever held over this period of time. Most medical services were provided, from eyes to feet."
