About the Cover

Cover Figure

Cover. Road signs are most effective when they are universally understood. Images can swiftly convey to passing motorists essential information that can save lives. The sign in this image is both conventionally terse and geographically specific. Posted on Interstate 5, north of San Ysidro Border Crossing near San Diego, the sign warns motorists that undocumented immigrants cross the freeway at this point. The mere existence of this sign is a testimony to the substantial flow of immigrants across the border and draws attention to a danger that is seldom referenced when assessing the risks associated with their movement north.
