Cover. Jim Borgman has satirized politicians, medical and public health researchers, and other newsmakers as the outstanding editorial cartoonist for The Cincinnati Enquirer since 1976, and won a Pulitzer Prize for his work in 1991. For this months' cover, Mr Borgman allows us to recognize-and laugh at-researchers' tendency to announce predictors of various outcomes with prolific frequency, often so that previous risk factors are now seen as protective factors. While this may reflect the actual complexities of any given health issue, it is little wonder that we can be confused about the nature of cause and effect. Mr Borgman's cartoon also reminds researchers to strive for evaluations of the highest integrity and quality, so that we may help reduce the apparent "randomness" of our health news rather than add to it.
Roger Vaughan and Robert Sember
Note. Mr Borgman's possible allusion to the New England Journal of Medicine is a complement to that iconic medical journal's recognition and visibility. Our intent is that the cartoon be understood to refer to all such journals, including AJPH.
