About the Cover

Cover Figure Cover. The abandoned scrubland shack framed against an expanse of blue sky interrupted only by clouds exquisitely captures the distance, isolation, and changing population patterns that are major elements of the rural health theme of this month's issue of the Journal. Guest editors Charles Phillips and Kenneth McLeroy worked for well over a year with their colleagues at the School of Rural Public Health to conduct outreach over the miles and bring together this collection of papers. The result is our first issue of the Journal expressly devoted to rural health and health care. The contributors to this issue succeed in deepening our understanding of the critical public health issues rural areas currently face as a result of ongoing demographic and social transitions. While they underscore the strengths of rural areas, they also don't flinch about the challenges encountered. Our hope is that the guiding principles of cultural sensitivity and the elimination of social disparities in health might broaden to encompass rural populations, along with a renewed appreciation of the fundamental differences of rural contexts and the increasing diversity of the public health needs of populations living and working in rural areas.
