In April 1997, tens of thousands of farmworkers and their supporters from all over California marched in Watsonville to protest working conditions and to demand a pay increase for strawberry workers in Salinas Valley. Few farmworkers have health benefits, despite exposure to pesticides–in particular, the ground fumigant methyl bromide, a well-known cause of birth defects in humans.
