Incorporating AIDS Orphans into a Microcredit program in Cameroon West Africa.

I was very interested in the article by Duerr, Posner and Gilbert on the support of foster care during acute refugee crises.

We have been operating since 1997 from our hospital a microcredit program for 10,000 poor women which is constantly expanding. With an increasing number of AIDS Orphans, we decided to incorporate these children into caring families which as a group are then eligible for loans. In addition to offering the families small loans, the children receive psychologic support, nutritional supplements, access to health care and education, and training in job skills. It has been a very successful program. Since caring families that can take on this responobility are not easy to find, we have trained "carers" to assume the role of surrogate parents. With proper funding this program could be vastly expended.
