LETTER

KINNEY RESPONDS

Patrick L. Kinney, ScD

Requests for reprints should be sent to Patrick L. Kinney, ScD, Division of Environmental Health Sciences, Mailman School of Public Health, 60 Haven Ave, B-1, New York, NY 10032 (e-mail: plk3{at}columbia.edu).

I thank Richter for offering an informative discussion of past efforts to address the public health effects of inadequate housing in New York City. I wholeheartedly agree that a more systemic and less segmental approach is likely to be more effective in controlling cockroaches and other pests that produce allergens linked with asthma.

The goal of our work has been to adapt tools from the field of integrated pest management that individual residents can use to reduce the impact of allergens while minimizing the use of pesticides. It is hoped that over time these principles may be adopted more systematically at the building, neighborhood, and city levels to achieve more effective—and safer—control of pests and the allergens associated with them.
